Gionee S5.5

Gionee Elife S5.5 Launched in April at a price of Rs 22990/- is the world’s Slimmest phone from Gionee which is just an year old company selling phones in India. Gionee belongs to China which is pretty infamous for it’s cheap quality products. But does this Gionee phone belongs to that category also? lets find it in this review.

Gionee S5.5

Short Review

Turns Ons: Slimmest Phone in the word, with thickness of just 5.55 mm, Excellent Built Quality and Software integration, Not only the phone, but the Box content (Earphones, Data Cable, Charger) are premium quality.

Turn Offs: Issues with battery backup, little bit of overheating and minor UI problem.

Longer Review

Gionee S5.5

If we talk about the build quality of Gionee Elife S5.5, it’s pretty impressive, you can feel that when you hold the device in your hands. It’s all metal and glass. The phone has a thickness of just 5.55mm and despite that it feels solid in hands, thanks to the all metal body and gorilla glass.

When you hold the phone, you will find the power button and volume rocker on the left side, so if you are going to use the flip cover (which comes with the phone) these buttons, which are the only physical buttons, will get covered.

On the right side on the phone, there is a slot of the micro usb sim.

The Micro USB port, used for charging as well as data synching, is on the top and the 3.5mm audio jack is at the bottom, so you have to keep your phone in the pocket upside down.

Gionee S5.5 Screenshots

This phones runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, with some minor customizations over it, Gionee has put their own UI skin over it which they call Amigo 2.0, an upgrade to the previous Amigo 1.0 which was used in earlier models of Gionee. Amigo UI has taken some inspiration from Apple’s iOS, The look and feel of the icons and the recent apps gesture was almost same as the iOS 7.

Update: Gionee has launched Elife S7 at Rs 24,999

Update: Gionee S5.5 got an OTA Upgrade (800+MB) of Android 4.4 (Android Kitkat) on 2nd July. The device has got many UI changes with nre Desktop layout. Plus, we also saw Google bundling their apps like Google Plus which was missing in the previous version.

Apart from that, the UI feels refreshing to me after using Samsung phones from last few years. The software integration has been nicely done and yet to find any problem using this customised Android.

The preloaded apps like Notes, Phone Accelerator and Power Manager are actually useful to many people and for other things there is obviously a Play store with thousands of apps.

Browsing and Gaming

Gionee S5.5 Browsing

This phone has preloaded browser UC Browser, which I personally don’t like much, so I ended up installing Boat Browser and Google Chrome. The browsing experience is pretty nice because of the big 5-inch screen.

The phone has octa-core processor and 2GB Ram so there is no problem browsing and switching between a couple of tabs, I am not much into games but the preloaded games (which are heavy) and I did not find any lag, but the phone gets heated up very quickly, same with watching videos on YouTube, the temperature near the camera area rises very quickly.

It has happened in almost all the Android devices I have used from low to high ends, the body of this phone is metal so you can feel the heat when you are holding it.

Camera and Multimedia

Gionee S5.5

Camera is the reason many people choose to buy a phone which is above 20k,  this phone is rocking in this department as it has a 13MP Main Camera and 5MP front camera with wide-angle shots, which makes it the best phone for taking selfies.

Speakers are not powerful, you will be able to hear the notifications when the phone is in your pocket, but if it’s in your hand and the value is on the higher side, you will notice the notification sounds are not clear and the feel pretty irritating at times, I am keeping the notification to 50% just to avoid this.
