Oppo Realme 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5: Which one should you buy

With each passing day, the competition in the budget segment of the smartphone market is getting stiffer.

The segment where xiaomi had been on the number one spot from last few years has finally started seeing some contenders who deserve your attention if you are looking for smartphones in the budget segment.

The recent addition to the competition is Oppo’s sub-brand it has launched exclusively for online sale, the Realme 1. If you read the subbrand carefully, it may sound like the Redmi, the budget series from xiaomi is the primary competition of Oppo with the Realme brand.

While the redmi Note series is it’s in the 5th generation, the Realme 1, as the name suggests is the first smartphone from the series.

While Oppo was busy, Putting their holding in every corner of the country, sponsoring every event possible to capture the offline market in India by offering selfie centric phones with features like Moonlight selfie, Xioami was quietly capturing the online market by offering highly VFM (value for money) product.

And now, when is your knee has started making their phones available in the offline stores as well, Oppo, with Realme 1 is making its attempt to get a share of the Pie in the online space by capitalizing on lack of availability of Xiaomi smartphones that are really tough to get your hands on.

Let’s talk about the design

Talking about the design the Realme 1 is surprisingly and nice phone with a refreshing design. Mostly all the smartphones, especially in the budget segment, have a pretty common and plane design.

But the Realme 1 changes that by bringing Diamond shaped back panel that looks pretty new as it reflects the lights differently from different angles.

The Redmi Note 5 has a metallic body well the real me uses a mix of plastic and polycarbonate but the body.

The back panel is a shiny surface and is prone to attract a lot of fingerprints. The device is lighter in comparison to the Redmi Note 5. For some people, the lighter weight would make Realme 1 feel a little less premium.

It is certainly not the case when you hold the phone in your hand. But the fancy back panel on the Realme 1 comes with a tradeoff, there is no Fingerprint sensor and only offers Face Unlock.

I’m talking about in the Redmi Note 5, the back of the phone lift identical to every other smartphone manufactured by Xiaomi.

If I have to choose between these devices completely on the basis of design, I would choose Realme 1 because of their refreshing design it has brought in the budget segment.

Let’s talk about the display

The Realme 1 has a 6 inch full HD plus IPS display with a 1.98 mm slim Diesel on the sides. The phone has a screen to body ratio of 84.8%. The pixel density of the phone is 402 PPI, which makes the display look sharp.

The color reproduction and giving angles are good, the contents could easily be viewed on the screen in direct sunlight as well.

If you talk about the Redmi Note 5, it is a 5.99 inch full HD plus display. The pixel density on the phone is 403 PPI.

This phone also does fairly well when it comes to viewing angle and sunlight readability.

Comparing this place on both the smartphones, it is mainly a tie between Realme 1 and the Redmi Note 5.

Let’s talk about the camera

The Realme 1 has a 13-megapixel rear camera to set aperture value of f/2.2.

There is an 8-megapixel front camera for taking selfies, and it also has a fairly nice job.

The Realme 1 has got ‘AI beauty’ feature that provides more suitable beautification for users.

Redmi note 5, on the other hand, has a 12-megapixel rear camera with an address the value of f/2.2.

There is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for taking selfies. The Redmi Note 5 also has got a selfie flash.

Now, before the comparison, Let me find out that we are talking about Abacus smartphone here, so you cannot expect much show me the other devices.

But since Oppo has kind of mastered the selfie game, it’s not how to make their smartphone cameras take good photos.

Let’s talk about the Software

The Realme 1 is powered by Android 8.1 based on ColourOS 5.0 out of the box. ColourOS is Oppo’s own custom skin, which tries to mimic the user interface of iOS.

Which means it puts a lot of limitations to the Android OS and customization it is known for.

If you have a never used to ColourOS before, it is going to be a challenge which would require a lot of patience.

Thankfully little things like running two instances of the same app, split screen feature etc are available.

The Redmi Note 5, on the other hand, is powered by Android 7.1.2 with MIUI 9 on the top.

The MIUI9 is also a kind of trying to mimic the iOS but isn’t too embarrassing. There are actually quite a handful of features that make it better than the stock Android.

SO the Realme 1 has the latest version available, partly because it was launched recently while Redmi Note 5 is a few months older smartphone.

Custom Skins make this point of choosing smartphones on the basis of Android version irrelevant. it’s not that there is a huge difference.

Plus, the Latest version of Android can be updated on Redmi Note 5 manually.

Let’s talk about the performance

The Realme 1 is powered by Aptech or MediaTek Helio P60 12nm processor (Quad 2GHz Cortex A73 + Quad 2GHz Cortex A53 CPUs) with 800MHz ARM Mali-G72 MP3 GPU under the hood.

It is MediaTek best processor for budget devices which has been used in a smartphone and its price, It is quite a bold step from Oppo considering their history of selling phones search processor at a much higher price.

For normal usage, they won’t be any lag what the phone won’t feel slower by any means.

Redmi Note 5 is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 625 Mobile platform with 8 ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked and 2.02 Ghz.

The Redmi Note 5 performs fairly well in day-to-day usage, there is no noticeable lag on the smart home.

Now if you talk about Helio P60 processor in Realme 1, it is equivalent to Snapdragon 660, which is the far better processor than Snapdragon 625 Xioami as decided to use in the Redmi Note 5.

So if you talk about specs wise, Realme 1 is it a clear winner.

Let’s talk about connectivity and storage

Budget smartphones of 4G VoLTE, however, the Realme 1 as a dual sim slot and dedicated microSD slot while the Redmi Note 5 has a hybrid dual SIM slot.

Also, the Realme 1 has dual VoLTE support, which means both the scenes can use 4G Network at the same time while using one for data and 14 VoLTE calls.

The Realme 1 Kamsin three different variants, 3GB RAM with 32GB storage, 4GB RAM with 64GB Storage, and 6 GB RAM with 128 GB storage. Also, the storage can be extended even further by using a microSD.

Talking about the Redmi Note 5, it has a 3 GB RAM with 32GB storage under 4 GB RAM with 64GB storage variant. You can expand the storage using micro SD, but then you will also have to compromise on using just one SIM in the phone.

So if you are someone who wants to get more storage and still wants to use to sense, you can get Realme 1, but if not, there is no reason not to get the Redmi Note 5.

Let’s talk about the battery

The Realme 1 has a battery of 3410mAh what Redmi Note 5 as a 4000mAh battery.

The Redmi Note 5 as quick charging 2.0 support, but it does bundle the Quick Charge 2.0 supporting charger (it will be a normal 2A charger from Xioami).

Realme 1, on the other hand, does not offer any such quick charing support.

Both are smartphones outlast for the whole day on a single charge with redmi Note 5 managing 2 make it until the next afternoon, considering your usage on both the smartphones is quite similar.

The usual on screen time would be around 8 to 9 hours, which is quite decent.

Now that we have compared the Realme 1 with Redmi Note 5, here comes the conclusion of this period article.

If you have owned a smartphone in a similar price range, there is a high chance the smartphone would be a Xiaomi.

If this is true then in the Redmi Note 5 would be a better choice because you would be familiar with all the stuff from a person in their phones.

But if you’re looking for a new design because you have gotten bored of the basic designed xiaomi has to offer, then Realme 1 could be your choice.

If we talk about the pricing, you can get the 32GB Storage and 3Gb RAM variant of the Realme 1 at Rs 8,999/- which is a great deal at the price. Remember, you can use the dedicated microSD slot to expand storage.

The 32GB Storage 3GB RAM Varian of Redmi Note 5 is priced at Rs 9999/-, which is also a good deal.
