How to Record Your Screen on Windows 10 Without Any Software
Windows 10 has a built-in screen recorder — no downloads, no installs, no watermarks. Here’s how to use it.
Videos/Captures as MP4 files automatically. You don’t need to download anything to record your screen on Windows 10. The operating system ships with a built-in screen recorder called Xbox Game Bar, and it works for any application — not just games. Here’s how to use it, plus two other native options you may not know about.
Method 1: Xbox Game Bar (Fastest — Already Installed)
Xbox Game Bar is the easiest built-in screen recorder on Windows 10. It’s enabled by default.
- Open the app or window you want to record
- Press Win + G to open the Game Bar overlay
- Click the Record button (circle with a dot), or press Win + Alt + R to start recording immediately
- A small recording timer appears in the top right corner
- Press Win + Alt + R again to stop recording
- Your video is saved automatically to
C:/Users/[You]/Videos/Captures
Xbox Game Bar Limitations
It records one app window at a time — you cannot record the full desktop or File Explorer. If you press Win + G on the desktop itself, you’ll see “Xbox Game Bar can’t record the desktop.” Switch to any open app (browser, Word, Notepad) and it works. For full desktop recording, OBS Studio (free download) is required.
Method 2: Snipping Tool with Screen Record (Windows 10 Update)
Microsoft rolled out screen recording to the Snipping Tool in late Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds. Check if you have it:
- Search for Snipping Tool in the Start menu and open it
- Look for a video camera icon (🎬) next to the camera icon in the toolbar
- If present: click it → drag to select a region → click Start → click Stop when done
If you don’t see the video icon, your Windows 10 build doesn’t have it yet — use Xbox Game Bar instead.
Method 3: PowerPoint Screen Recording (If You Have Microsoft 365)
Microsoft PowerPoint has a built-in screen recorder that saves directly to your computer as an MP4:
- Open PowerPoint (any presentation, even blank)
- Go to Insert → Screen Recording
- Drag to select the area you want to record
- Click the red record button
- Click Stop when done
- Right-click the video in the slide → Save Media As → save as MP4
This method records any region including the full desktop — something Xbox Game Bar can’t do. If you have Microsoft 365, this is the best no-install option for full-screen recording.
Does Windows 10 Screen Recorder Record Audio?
Yes. Xbox Game Bar records system audio (what you hear through speakers) by default. To also record your microphone, press Win + Alt + M to toggle the mic on before recording. You can also set this in Game Bar’s Audio settings panel.
Where Are Xbox Game Bar Recordings Saved?
All recordings go to Videos → Captures folder automatically. You can change this in Settings → Gaming → Captures → Recording Location → Change Folder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Xbox Game Bar say “Xbox Game Bar can’t record the desktop”?
Game Bar requires a focused application window to record — it won’t capture the desktop, File Explorer, or certain system windows. Click into a browser, document, or any regular app and press Win + G there to start recording that window.
Can I record the full screen including the taskbar without installing anything?
PowerPoint Screen Recording (Insert → Screen Recording) lets you draw a selection region that includes the taskbar and full desktop. It requires Microsoft Office/365 but no additional download.
Is there a time limit on Xbox Game Bar recordings?
No time limit — Xbox Game Bar records until you stop it or run out of disk space. Note that long recordings can produce very large files since it records at high bitrate by default.
