⚡ TL;DR: Dashlane is polished and feature-rich with built-in VPN and dark web monitoring, but it’s one of the most expensive password managers. At $33/year, you’re paying for features most users won’t need. Rating: 4.0/5

Dashlane was once my go-to password manager recommendation. Then they removed offline mode, raised prices, and cut features from the free tier. It’s still a solid product — but harder to recommend over cheaper alternatives. Here’s the 2025 breakdown.

2026 Update: Critical update: Dashlane free accounts moved to read-only on September 16, 2025, and will be permanently deleted September 16, 2026. If you have a free Dashlane account, export your vault immediately. Paid accounts are unaffected. Dashlane now has passkey support — 40% of users store at least one passkey, double the figure from a year ago.

What Dashlane Offers

✅ Pros

• Excellent browser extension UX
• Built-in VPN (Hotspot Shield)
• Dark web monitoring included
• Password Health score
• Identity theft insurance (US)
• Passkey support
• Form auto-fill is excellent

❌ Cons

• No offline mode (cloud-only)
• Expensive vs competitors
• Not open-source
• Free tier limited to 1 device
• VPN is basic (Hotspot Shield)
• Removed features over time

The VPN: Useful Bonus or Gimmick?

Dashlane includes a VPN powered by Hotspot Shield. It’s not a VPN I’d recommend as a standalone product — it has limited server selection and inconsistent Netflix support. But as a “nice to have” for securing public Wi-Fi connections, it’s a useful bonus that adds value to the package.

Dark Web Monitoring

Dashlane continuously scans the dark web for your email addresses and alerts you if they appear in data breach dumps. This is available on free tiers of some other managers but Dashlane does it automatically and clearly — it’s one of the best implementations of this feature.

Pricing

💰 Dashlane Plans

• Free: 25 passwords, 1 device only

• Advanced: $33/year (unlimited passwords + sync)

• Premium: $60/year (adds VPN + dark web monitoring)

Should You Get Dashlane?

Dashlane is best for users who specifically want password manager + VPN + dark web monitoring in one app and don’t want to manage separate subscriptions. For everyone else, Bitwarden (free) or 1Password (better UX, same price) are stronger choices.

🎯 Verdict: 4.0/5. Dashlane is polished and capable but overpriced for most users. The built-in VPN and dark web monitoring add genuine value, but rivals offer better value for money. Consider Bitwarden or 1Password instead.
