First, let’s understand what DFU stands for, it’s the full form is Device Firmware Update, it is the last step of troubleshooting the iPhone, whether it is about updating the iPhone or doing tricky things like jailbreaking.

The last time I tried DFU mode, was over a decade ago, to an iPod, the software had gotten accidentally corrupted and it wasn’t turning on. The DFU mode saved it as it was recognized by iTunes and I was able to put the software back in working order.

Today let’s just know how you can put your iPhone to the DFU mode to make some fixes if your iPhone has become inaccessible.

Here’s How to Put iPhone 7, 7S, iPhone 8, iPhone X and iPhone XS in DFU Mode

  1. Turn off your iPhone and Plug it into your Mac or PC
  2. Launch the iTunes app on your Mac or PC
  3. Press and hold down the Power button on the iPhone for 3 seconds
  4. Press and hold down the Volume button of your iPhone while still holding down the power button
  5. Hold the buttons for another 10 seconds (If you see the Apple logo on the screen, you might have to start all over again)
  6. Let go of the power button but keep holding the volume down button about 5 seconds (if it says ‘Plug into iTunes’ you might have to start all over again‘)
  7. Your iPhone goes into DFU mode if you get a vibration on the iPhone and the screen is still dark.

Here is How to Put iPhone 6S or Earlier iPhones, iPad or iPod Touch in DFU Mode

  1. Turn off your iPhone and Plug it into your Mac or PC
  2. Launch the iTunes app on your Mac or PC
  3. Press and hold down the Power button on the iPhone for 3 seconds
  4. Press and hold down the Home button of your iPhone while still holding down the power button
  5. Hold the buttons for another 10 seconds (If you see the Apple logo on the screen, you might have to start all over again)
  6. Let go of the Power button but keep holding the Home button about 5 seconds (if it says ‘Plug into iTunes’ you might have to start all over again‘)
  7. Your iPhone goes into DFU mode if you get a vibration on the iPhone and the screen is still dark.

When your device is in DFU mode, the iTunes app will detect it and you will be able to restore.
