McAfee is one of the oldest names in cybersecurity. But after spinning off from Intel, the modern McAfee Total Protection is a very different product from its early days. Has it kept up with lighter, smarter rivals? Let’s find out.
2026 Update: McAfee’s unlimited devices tier continues to offer good family value in 2026. The suite bundles unlimited-data VPN, identity theft monitoring, True Key password manager, and browser protection across Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Pricing has held steady — competitive when split across a household plan.
What McAfee Total Protection Includes
• Unlimited device coverage (Premium plan)
• Solid 99.7% detection rate
• Identity theft protection
• Credit score monitoring (US)
• Unlimited VPN (Premium)
• Safe browsing tools
• File shredder
• Highest renewal price of major antiviruses
• Heavy on system resources
• Aggressive upsell notifications
• Slower scan speeds
• VPN not great for streaming
• Some features US-only
Detection Rates: Still Competitive
McAfee scores well in independent tests — AV-TEST gives it 5.5-6/6 for protection, and it detects 99.7% of widespread malware. That’s not quite the 99.9%+ of Bitdefender and Norton, but it’s still far better than running unprotected.
Where McAfee has improved is in zero-day protection. Its cloud-based threat intelligence means new threats identified on one device are pushed out as protections to all users almost instantly.
Performance: The Achilles Heel
McAfee remains one of the heavier antivirus products in 2025. In my testing on a mid-range Windows 11 PC:
- Full scan time: 52 minutes — significantly slower than competitors
- CPU during scan: 65-80% — noticeably impacts usability
- Idle background CPU: 3-5% — higher than most rivals
- Gaming performance: McAfee’s “Gamer Mode” helps, but it’s still more impactful than Bitdefender
If you have a high-end gaming PC, this won’t matter much. On older hardware or mid-range laptops, you’ll feel the McAfee tax.
McAfee Pricing: The Real Issue
⚠️ McAfee’s Renewal Pricing
• Year 1 (Premium, unlimited devices): ~$39.99
• Renewal: ~$119.99-$179.99/year
That’s significantly more expensive than Norton 360 (~$105) and Bitdefender (~$90) at renewal — for arguably inferior performance.
Who Should Buy McAfee?
McAfee’s strongest argument is its unlimited device coverage on the Premium plan. If you have a large family with 8+ devices spanning Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, McAfee can work out cheaper than per-device plans from rivals.
For everyone else — especially gamers and performance-focused users — Bitdefender or Norton offer better value. The detection rates are similar or better, the performance impact is lower, and the pricing is more reasonable at renewal.
