Meta has a new app, and it isn’t another chatbot. Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent — you tell it what needs doing, and it goes off and does it: fills in forms, books things, shops, and keeps working after you close the app. If you’ve seen the name everywhere since early September and still aren’t sure what it actually is, this is the plain-English version.
Meta Muse is a personal AI agent that Meta launched on September 8, 2026. Unlike a chatbot that only answers questions, Muse takes actions for you — sending emails, filling out forms, booking travel and shopping — using its own secure cloud computer and browser. It runs on Meta’s Muse Spark model, works in the Muse app and inside WhatsApp, is free up to a weekly usage limit, and is currently available only in the US to people aged 18 and over.
What Is Meta Muse, Exactly?
Meta Muse is an AI agent: software that plans and carries out tasks on your behalf rather than just replying with text. You talk to it like you’d message a person — in the Muse app, on the web at muse.ai, or directly inside WhatsApp — and it turns what you ask for into actions.
Meta’s own launch post describes it as “a secure, private personal AI agent that proactively helps with people’s goals and suggests ideas.” The key word is proactively. Muse is designed to remember what matters to you, suggest things you didn’t ask for, and keep working on longer jobs in the background, checking back in when it needs your approval.
It’s powered by Muse Spark, Meta’s multimodal model built for this kind of agentic work. Muse Spark first appeared in April 2026, and version 1.3 arrived on September 2, just before the Muse app launched.
What Can Muse Actually Do?
Meta’s examples are deliberately everyday. Muse can:
- Find a form in your email (a school field-trip slip, for example) and fill it out
- Track a price or a reservation and book it when conditions are right
- Draft and send follow-up emails — only after you approve them
- Shop and check out using a one-time virtual card, so your real card number isn’t exposed
- Turn a recipe reel you saved on Instagram into a grocery list
- Plan a bigger goal — a trip, a training plan, selling a car — and keep advancing it over days
At Meta Connect on September 23, Meta added more: Muse is getting a talking digital avatar you can video-chat with, its own email address, the ability to operate apps on a Mac, and shopping connectors with retailers including Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Walmart and Wayfair, plus Expedia and (soon) Instacart. Several of those were announced as “coming soon” rather than available today, so check the app for what’s live in your account.
How Does Muse Work Behind the Scenes?
This is where Muse differs most from a normal AI app. Each user’s Muse runs on its own Muse Secure VM — a dedicated virtual computer in the cloud with its own browser. That’s where the agent does its work and where any logins you connect are stored.
Meta built a few safety layers around it:
- A separate “Sentinel” agent sits on the same machine. Nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless Sentinel approves it.
- A credential vault. Muse can use your saved logins and payment methods without being able to see them.
- Approval before sensitive actions. Muse asks before it sends an email or makes a purchase, and it keeps an audit trail of everything it has done.
- Per-app permissions. You choose which apps it connects to and how much it can do — for email, for example, read-only or read-and-send.
Meta also says Muse conversations and the data in your VM aren’t shared with its ad systems, and you can opt out of your interactions being used to train Meta’s models. A fully encrypted “Confidential VM” — where only you hold the key — is promised for later this year.
Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp. It’s rated 18+. Support for Meta’s AI glasses was announced as “coming in the next few months.” If you’re outside the US, the app won’t let you sign up yet.
How Much Does Meta Muse Cost?
Muse has a free tier and paid plans. Mark Zuckerberg said at launch that Muse is free to use for up to 100 million tokens per week — a unit of AI compute — with subscriptions for people who use more. Press coverage has reported the paid plans at $20 and $100 per month. For ordinary errands, most people are unlikely to hit the free limit; the paid tiers are aimed at heavy users who keep Muse running tasks all day.
| Plan | Price | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 (up to 100M tokens/week) | Most people — occasional errands, bookings and forms |
| Mid tier | $20/month (as reported) | Regular users running several ongoing tasks |
| Top tier | $100/month (as reported) | Heavy users who keep Muse working constantly |
One cost worth separating out: when Muse buys something for you, you pay for the item itself. Meta says checkout runs through Link by Stripe with a one-time card, and Muse is covered by Link’s purchase protections.
Is Meta Muse Safe to Use?
On paper, Muse has one of the more careful security designs of any consumer AI agent — the isolated VM, the Sentinel gatekeeper, the hidden credential vault and the approval step before payments all address the obvious worries. Early hands-on reviewers have praised how transparent it is: you can watch its browser work and see a log of what it did.
The real question is trust, not engineering. Using Muse well means connecting your email, calendar, and potentially your shopping accounts to Meta. Some people are comfortable with that; plenty aren’t. The sensible middle ground is to start small.
Connect one app at a time, give Muse read-only access first (let it read email before it can send), and check the audit trail after its first few tasks. You can remove access or disconnect a service at any time from the app’s settings.
How Is Muse Different From Meta AI?
Meta AI is the chatbot built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. You ask it things; it answers. Muse is a separate product built to do things. It has its own app, its own cloud computer, connections to your accounts and the ability to act on them. Think of Meta AI as the assistant you chat with, and Muse as the assistant you hand jobs to.
How Does Muse Compare With ChatGPT and Gemini?
Muse isn’t the only agent. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July 2026 — an agent that can work across connected apps for hours and produce finished documents — for paid ChatGPT plans. Google’s Gemini Spark, announced at I/O in May, is a 24/7 agent that works across Gmail, Docs and other Google apps, and is now rolling out to the $20-a-month Google AI Pro plan in the US.
Where Muse stands out is how consumer-focused it is: a genuinely usable free tier, WhatsApp access, and a heavy emphasis on shopping and household errands rather than office work. ChatGPT Work leans toward productivity and documents; Gemini Spark leans on your Google account.
How to Get Started With Muse
- Download the Muse app on iOS or Android, or go to muse.ai (US only, 18+).
- Sign in with your Meta account and read the permissions screen carefully.
- Give it a small, low-risk first task — for example, “find restaurants near me that take reservations for four on Friday.”
- Connect one app when a task needs it, and choose read-only where possible.
- Review the audit log after the task finishes before you give it more access.
- Muse is an AI agent that acts for you, not just a chatbot
- It launched September 8, 2026 and is US-only and 18+ for now
- Free up to 100M tokens a week; reported paid plans at $20 and $100 a month
- It runs in its own secure cloud computer and asks before paying or sending
- Start with read-only access and one connected app
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Meta Muse free?
Yes, for most people. Meta says Muse is free up to 100 million tokens of usage per week, which covers typical personal errands. Paid plans exist for heavier use.
Can I use Meta Muse in India or the UK?
Not yet. At launch, Muse is available only in the US. Meta hasn’t given dates for other countries.
Does Muse work inside WhatsApp?
Yes. In the US you can message Muse directly in WhatsApp as well as in the standalone Muse app and on the web.
Can Muse spend my money without asking?
No. Meta says Muse checks with you before purchases and other sensitive actions like sending emails, and it pays with a one-time virtual card rather than your real card number.
Is Muse the same as Meta AI?
No. Meta AI is the chatbot inside Meta’s apps. Muse is a separate agent product that can take actions across your connected apps and the web.
The Bottom Line
Meta Muse is Meta’s biggest consumer AI bet so far: an agent that actually does errands rather than just talking about them. The security design is thoughtful, the free tier is generous, and WhatsApp access makes it unusually easy to try. It’s also brand new, US-only, and asks for a lot of trust. Try it on small, low-stakes tasks first.
