Siri AI — Apple’s rebuilt assistant with Gemini-quality AI, conversation history, and agentic features — isn’t available on every device that runs iOS 27. There are two tiers of Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, and Siri AI specifically sits behind a hardware wall that excludes most existing Apple devices. If you’re trying to figure out whether your iPhone, iPad or Mac makes the cut, this is the complete list.
Short Answer: Siri AI requires iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, or iPhone 17 Pro Max (all with 12GB RAM). On iPad, M4 chip or later. On Mac, M3 chip or later — again with 12GB unified memory minimum. Older devices including iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and M1/M2 Macs get iOS 27 and general Apple Intelligence features but not the rebuilt Siri. EU and China users are excluded at launch regardless of hardware.
Why Siri AI Has Different Requirements Than Apple Intelligence
iOS 27 ships two distinct AI tiers. The first — general Apple Intelligence — includes Writing Tools, Photos AI editing (Extend, Reframe, Clean Up), Image Playground, and Visual Intelligence. This works on iPhone 15 Pro, all iPhone 16 models, and any iPad or Mac with M1 or later.
The second tier is Siri AI: the rebuilt assistant with its own app, conversation history, Dynamic Island integration, Visual Intelligence in the Camera, and early agentic features like automatic password updates. Siri AI runs a significantly heavier AI model. The cloud side uses AFM Cloud Pro, a model Apple describes as comparable in capability to Google’s Gemini Frontier — this requires more on-device processing power and memory to handle the coordination layer. Apple set 12GB unified memory as the minimum threshold, which eliminates most existing Apple Intelligence-compatible devices.
iPhones That Support Siri AI
Only three iPhone models support Siri AI at launch:
- iPhone Air — Apple’s new thin-form-factor iPhone, 12GB RAM
- iPhone 17 Pro — 12GB RAM
- iPhone 17 Pro Max — 12GB RAM
That’s the complete list. Every iPhone released before the iPhone 17 lineup — including the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and all earlier models — does not qualify for Siri AI even if it runs iOS 27 and supports general Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 17 (non-Pro) has not been confirmed for Siri AI support. Based on Apple’s stated 12GB RAM requirement and the standard iPhone 17’s expected 8GB configuration, it’s likely excluded — though Apple hasn’t published final specs. Assume the standard iPhone 17 does not support Siri AI until Apple confirms otherwise.
If you have an iPhone 16 Pro: You get iOS 27, the Photos AI editing tools (Extend, Reframe, Clean Up), Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence — but not the rebuilt Siri AI. You’ll continue using the existing Siri on the 16 Pro. The new Siri app won’t appear on your device.
iPads That Support Siri AI
On iPad, the requirement is M4 chip or later with at least 12GB of unified memory:
- iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) — supported in 16GB and 32GB configurations
- iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) — supported in 16GB and 32GB configurations
- Any future iPad with M4 or later chip
The iPad Air (M2), iPad mini (M3), and any iPad with M1, M2, or M3 chip do not qualify for Siri AI. They get iPadOS 27 and general Apple Intelligence but not the rebuilt Siri.
Note on M4 iPad storage tiers: the base M4 iPad Pro starts at 16GB RAM, which meets the 12GB minimum. There is no M4 iPad Pro with 8GB RAM, so all M4 iPad Pro models in the current lineup qualify for Siri AI.
Macs That Support Siri AI
On Mac, the requirement is M3 chip or later with at least 12GB of unified memory:
- MacBook Air (M3) — supported in 16GB and 24GB configurations (not the base 8GB model)
- MacBook Pro (M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max) — all configurations except base M3 with 8GB RAM
- Mac mini (M3 or M4) — supported in 16GB+ configurations
- Mac Studio (M3 Max, M3 Ultra, M4 Max, M4 Ultra) — all configurations
- Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) — supported (192GB unified memory)
- iMac (M3) — supported in 16GB and 24GB configurations (not base 8GB)
- Any Mac with M4 or later — all configurations meeting the 12GB minimum
M1 and M2 Macs are excluded from Siri AI entirely, even the M2 Ultra with 192GB of RAM. The requirement is M3 or later — chip generation matters, not just memory. M1 and M2 Macs get macOS 26 and general Apple Intelligence features, but Siri AI is not available.
The 8GB trap: Several M3 Macs are available in a base 8GB RAM configuration — the MacBook Air M3 (8GB), Mac mini M3 (8GB), and iMac M3 (8GB). These have the right chip but don’t meet the 12GB memory minimum. They get general Apple Intelligence but not Siri AI. If you’re buying now specifically for Siri AI, choose 16GB or higher.
What You Get on Non-Siri-AI Devices
A device that runs iOS 27 or macOS 26 but doesn’t meet the Siri AI hardware requirements still gets meaningful Apple Intelligence features — just not the rebuilt Siri:
- Writing Tools (rewrite, proofread, summarise) across all apps
- Photos Extend, Reframe, and Clean Up AI editing
- Image Playground (realistic image generation in iOS 27)
- Visual Intelligence (point camera at objects to ask questions)
- Priority notifications and email summaries
- iOS 27 performance improvements (30% faster app launches, 70% faster Photos loading)
What you don’t get: the new Siri app, conversation history, Dynamic Island Siri, the Gemini-quality AI reasoning, and the agentic features like automatic password updates.
The EU and China Situation
Siri AI does not launch in the European Union or China at iOS 27 release, regardless of hardware. EU users running iOS 27 on an iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Pro will see the existing Siri interface — not the rebuilt version. China users are in the same position.
In the EU, the issue is the Digital Markets Act. Apple’s current Siri AI architecture involves third-party model collaboration (the Google Gemini Frontier-quality backend) in a way that Apple hasn’t yet structured to satisfy DMA compliance requirements. General Apple Intelligence features continue to work in the EU. Apple has not given a timeline for Siri AI EU availability.
In China, the restriction appears to be related to local AI regulation requirements that Apple’s current Siri AI setup doesn’t yet satisfy.
When Does Siri AI Actually Arrive?
Developer beta launched in June 2026, with a waitlist even for supported hardware. Public beta follows in July 2026. The full public release is September 2026 with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 26 Tahoe.
Apple’s track record with Apple Intelligence rollout is worth noting: several iOS 18 Apple Intelligence features shipped late or in limited form. The September public release is the date to wait for rather than assuming the developer beta represents the final feature set.
How to Check If Your Device Qualifies
On iPhone: Go to Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. If Siri AI is available on your device, you’ll see an option to join the waitlist or enable it. If you only see standard Siri settings, your hardware doesn’t meet the requirements.
On Mac: System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. Same pattern — if the rebuilt Siri options appear, your Mac qualifies. If you see the standard Siri interface, it doesn’t.
You can also check your device’s RAM: Settings → General → About (iPhone/iPad) or Apple Menu → About This Mac. If your device shows 12GB or more and is in the supported chip tier, it qualifies. Less than 12GB means general Apple Intelligence only, not Siri AI.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does iPhone 16 Pro support Siri AI?
No. The iPhone 16 Pro has 8GB of RAM, which falls below the 12GB minimum. It runs iOS 27 and supports general Apple Intelligence — Writing Tools, Photos AI editing, Visual Intelligence — but not the rebuilt Siri AI.
Does the MacBook Air M2 support Siri AI?
No. The requirement is M3 chip or later. M2 Macs are excluded regardless of RAM. The M2 MacBook Air (up to 24GB) gets macOS 26 and general Apple Intelligence, but Siri AI requires M3 generation or newer.
Will older devices ever get Siri AI?
Apple has not announced plans to bring Siri AI to older hardware. The 12GB RAM and M3/A17-equivalent chip requirements reflect genuine processing demands of the model, not arbitrary marketing tiers. A software update enabling Siri AI on 8GB or M2 devices is unlikely.
Is Siri AI available with a free Apple ID?
Yes — Siri AI is included in iOS 27 at no additional cost on supported hardware. It’s not a subscription feature. The only requirements are hardware (12GB RAM, right chip generation) and geography (not in EU or China at launch).
Can I use Siri AI in the developer beta?
If you have supported hardware and are enrolled in the Apple Developer Program (or the public beta when it opens in July), yes — but even on supported hardware, there’s a separate waitlist for Siri AI access in the beta. It’s not automatically enabled once you install the beta.
