People have been using the images from a very long time, perhaps since the internet became mainstream.

Such as, to use the crying emoji, simply type ‘crying’ and one of the options in the suggestion by would be the 😢.
This makes it really useful, and I use it all the time, such as, if I have to wish someone a happy birthday. I simply type the message and then type ‘cake’ which suggests the 🎂
