I get this question almost every other day in my messenger.

“Why my laptop or computer is running slow I just bought it last month.”

And most of the time there is nothing wrong with the machine, but how you are using it.

Laptops available in the market are powerful enough for casual activities like browsing the internet, emails and document processing and maybe some light photo editing.

If you are expecting more than that from a computer that costs less than a Mid-range Android smartphone, then I am sorry that this post is not going to help you.

But if it is giving poor performance even while browsing websites, for using one or two applications then considered reading this article.

What is making your PC slow down?

There are several factors a PC Can have issues in performance. Doing the following things might help.

Limit your Chrome browser usage

One of the key factors in getting a PC Slow Down is the Chrome Browser which is known to be a memory hogger. With so many extensions available for the browser, one can easily overload the browser with unnecessary apps running in the background.

The way Chrome extension is built, a lot of its apps and extensions keep running in the background even when you are not using it which puts stress on your computer’s CPU and takes a lot of RAM.

We have written about limiting Chrome’s memory usage in the past and I would recommend you give it a read.

If you are using a Windows PC you can check out the memory usage in the task manager. You can enter the task manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Get Rid of the unnecessary programs and files on your computer

One of the reasons your PC slows down as you have installed a number of applications on your computer thinking you will be needing them someday.

Most of these apps automatically get added to the startup, so that they can run when you boot up the machine, this unnecessarily puts the strain on the CPU and also increases the bootup time.

So it’s better to review the applications you have installed on your machine and uninstall the ones that you are not planning to use them anytime soon.

You will be amazed that you will be able to uninstall a dozen applications that you won’t ever need.

I would recommend you use CCleaner software, which is an excellent tool not only for uninstalling the unused applications but also cleaning temporary files and browser data.

This cleanup can wipe all the unnecessary data on a computer so that a computer doesn’t have to 10000s of files which will improve its performance.

Ditch the native apps and embrace the web apps

For every app that you install on your PC, there are alternatives available for it in the form of web apps, these apps arranging from PDF converters to image editors, let you use the processing power of powerful computers via cloud computing and clean up your average computer from recourse intensive tasks.

For example, you can totally ditch installing the Microsoft office on your computer and use Google Docs instead, which will save you from installing a 1.5 GB file on your computer.

Same goes for other programs like Adobe Photoshop, which is another huge file, but if you only have to edit images you can use apps like Pixlr Editor.

Browser extensions for both the services work in a similar manner and help you fix your writings.

While Grammarly only offers to correct spelling errors, placement of commas, or suggesting the use of better words for more refined sentences.

Ginger also offers Definitions, Translation in 40 languages, apart from fixing spelling errors and better sentence formation. But it presents all the text in the popup editor in a jumbled form.

I have found the implementation of Grammarly better and less cluttered since it does not try to offer everything in the same window.

I also found that Grammarly offers more suggestions for synonyms of words when you click on a particular word.

The good thing about Grammarly and Ginger is that both offer a free version of their services, which is good enough for regular users for simple spelling fixes and better sentence formation.

Talking about the paid version, both have a similar kind of pricing model, you can pay a monthly fee of somewhere around $12 on both the services per month if you pay annually, or else $29 per month, paid monthly.

The premium version in Grammarly unlocks 400+ fixes and features that let users correct twice as many mistakes as free users, on an average. The new version also gives Plagiarism checker, which can be helpful when writing long academic essays.

And the premium version of Ginger unlocks the Sentence Rephraser, text reader for knowing how to pronounce words, and also gives you analysis of errors you make while writing.

For a normal user, the free version of any of these services will work.

Which one to pick from?

I have used both the services, especially the Chrome extension since I write mostly in inside the browser, I found the implementation of Grammarly better than Ginger, and the fact that I don’t use dictionary and translation tools for my writing, Grammarly, kind of wins over Ginger for me.

But since it’s free, you can use both of them for a particular period and decide it for yourself, if you are still confused about which one to go with.

Google Chrome offers so many awesome features to the power users so that I can get more done in less time.

One of the features that make Google Chrome the best browser available is the availability of Chrome extensions that add functionality to the browser.

You can add any Chrome Extension from the Chrome web store and we have listed a bunch of them in our previous post as well.

But, did you know that you can add custom keyboard shortcuts to launch particular extension and perform an action?

What difference does the keyboard shortcuts really make?

If you need a bit of reasoning here to know why keyboard shortcuts make a huge difference in your workflow, here it is.

Usually, the icons for Chrome Extension and apps appear on the top right-hand side just beside the address bar, and there is only limited space available there, if you use a lot of Chrome extensions then it is a bit tricky to prioritise and keep the icons available so that you can activate them in just one click.

Assigning custom keyboard shortcuts to Chrome is pretty easy and there are two ways to do it.

You can either click on the three dots that appear on the top right-hand side of your browser, then click on more settings where you will find extensions, which will open the extension manager where all your extensions will be visible.

Alternatively, you can also type chrome://extensions/, in your address bar to open the extension manager.

You can then click on the hamburger icon that appears on the top left, where you will find the keyboard shortcuts option, clicking on that will take you to the page where you can set custom keyboard shortcuts for the installed extensions.

After you have assigned a keyboard shortcut to launch a chrome extension, you can also hide from the address bar area to make room for other chrome extension icons which do not necessarily require a keyboard shortcut.

The best way to post photos and videos to Instagram from your PC

It’s been awhile since I wrote this simple guide to posting photos Instagram directly from your PC.

In the guide, I mentioned few browser extensions which give you the feature to upload photos to Instagram. And probably all the methods that I mentioned gave mobile-like interface so that it makes easier for non-techie people to use and post photos on Instagram.

These extensions, however, lack the option to post videos.

So in this article, I am going to talk about the best way to post photos and videos to Instagram directly from your PC and it is much better than the previous solutions we mentioned in that article.

Note: If you are a non-techie person and only need a solution to post photos, that too, not very often, then those solutions are still good enough.

So how do we post directly to Instagram from PC?

The best way to post videos and photos to Instagram directly from my PC is to use Gramblr app. The grammar app is available for both Mac and PC.

You can download Gramblr by clicking this link 

Unlike other applications on your computer, it runs inside a browser, the address is something like http://localhost:4343/

The interface is pretty simple to use and easy to understand.

The reason why I am calling it the best solution for posting directly from PC is that it has got more features, probably more than what you get on the official Instagram app.

Not only it lets you post your own photos and videos, you can also Repost other Instagram photos and videos to just by copy-pasting the post link to Gramblr.

It also has got a Scheduling future so you can upload multiple photos and videos at once and they will be posted on it’s scheduled time.

The only thing required to do it is that it needs to run in the background, which is not an issue since you can keep in the browser tab open and continue working on whatever you are doing on your PC.

Run Multiple and Post to Multiple Instagram Accounts from Computer

The app also supports multiple accounts, which makes it easy to manage more than one account at once, since you do not have to log out and log in every time you want to use different accounts.

Get More Likes on Your Instagram Posts with Gramble

Other than all these things, The Gambler app has Coin based system for its own platform, where you can earn Coins by liking photos that appear in the Gambler app and once you earn coins, you can spend the coins to get Likes from other Gramblr users on your particular Instagram post.

For every like you are 5 coins, and to get 1 like you have to spend 10 coins.

You can also buy coins if you want to get more like and do not want to participate in liking other photos, for $5.95 dollars you can get 10000 coins which is sufficient for getting 1000 likes.

And this is probably how Gramblr has plans to make money, but the good news is, there is no limitation on posting on Instagram.

To be honest, getting likes from random people isn’t really beneficial. If you really care about the Instagram platform, I would rather suggest you get likes organically from the users who are interested in your content and can engage with it.

So I am not interested in this particular feature Gramblr has to offer, but I am really impressed with its other features that let me post photos and videos to my Multiple Instagram profile easily.

Stop logging into the untrustworthy websites using Facebook

Now if you have already given permission to use your Facebook data to a couple of apps, you can easily remove access to individual apps by going to the settings area on Facebook.

For example, you may want to disable the permissions to access contacts on your smartphone, or maybe your location as well if you don’t use check-in feature on Facebook.

A similar thing goes with other permissions such as permissions to use a microphone (there have been reports in the past that Facebook messenger listens to our conversations also, which was not proved but it’s better to keep it turned off if you don’t use voice services).

You might already be aware of this, but before doing anything on Facebook, keep in mind that all the things that you post on the Internet will remain there forever even if you delete it today it will be cashed at some part of the servers.

So, be hundred percent sure whatever you want to post publicly, even with the chemical profile picture protection features on Facebook if someone has to access your profile picture it is not a big deal for them.

If you are a WhatsApp user and you have faced this problem where your entire list of contact has turned into a bunch of phone numbers despite having all of them saved in your phonebook, then read this article to know how you can solve this problem where you WhatsApp does not show any of your contacts in WhatsApp.

The problem is pretty simple, and most of the cases it has to do with the permissions that were introduced in the newer versions of the Android OS.

For everything to work as they should all the apps on your smartphone requires permission to use the hardware on your smartphone, such as the camera, microphone, location access, storage access etc.

For WhatsApp to access properly it also requires certain permissions, that is done when you are setting up your WhatsApp for the first time.

To take photos from the Whatsapp camera you need to allow it to use your smartphone camera and microphone.

Similarly to show the contacts you need to give WhatsApp the permission to access it. If it was showing earlier, and the contacts disappeared automatically, there may have been something that triggered your system to deny the permission to WhatsApp for accessing the contact area.

How to give WhatsApp the permissions it requires to show contacts?

There are two ways to give permissions 2 WhatsApp for any other,

  • One when you are setting up the app, and second,
  • Manually going to the permission area and give the permission.

To use the first method you can clear out the cache and data from the settings area but you will have to setup your WhatsApp again that means verifying your phone number. Though, they won’t be any loss of in data.

But we would recommend the second method, that is, going to the permissions area manually. Simply long press on the WhatsApp icon and drag it over to the top left, where it says ‘info’

This will take you to the apps setting page where you can scroll down to find the permissions section. When you tap on permissions, you will be able to see what access in the app has, you will notice that the contact access has been denied simply tap on it and allow the access.

Once you have allowed the access, force close the WhatsApp and also close it from the recent memory now when you will open WhatsApp you will be able to see all your contacts.

Similarly, if any other thing, such as the camera or the microphone is not working in WhatsApp or any other App you can follow this process to get it done.

Now, just imagining that WhatsApp can get hacked can send the chills down to our spine, this is why I should take extra measures to keep your WhatsApp safe.

Lock Your WhatsApp, even though your smartphone has a phone lock and then your phones have also got fingerprint locks, it is wiser to also lock the WhatsApp app.

They are smartphones like Xiaomi which have got this inbuilt feature where you can lock your individual apps, but you can also install third-party apps from Play store to get the stand. Doing this will provide an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp.

Do not share your phone with people you don’t know, as we have mentioned in the article about what can be done if someone gets a hold of your smartphone for just a few seconds. So better be aware of this fact and always be of caution when you share your phone with others.

Block installation from unknown sources. This setting can be useful in providing an extra layer of security why not allowing AP installations on your phone from unknown sources. The apps can only be installed from the Play Store which is usually free from such spyware apps.

Well, the best option that does not require a lot of effort from your side is using BlueStacks, it’s an app that gives an Android-like environment so that you can install Android apps in sided and run it on your PC.

You can download the BlueStacks app from its official website and install it on your Windows PC.

Then go to APK mirror.com and download the apk file of the app that you want to install on your PC. And then install it to BlueStack app.

The interface given by BlueStack is pretty much similar to an Android phone so you can continue working on whatever you want and still Run BlueStacks app as if you are running it on your mobile phone.

Another option you can try installing NoxPlayer which is pretty much similar to the BlueStacks App but is little faster. It also gives you full access to Google Play Store services so that you don’t have to sideload apps from third-party sources and directly install apps from Google Play Store.

This may seem a little thing but is useful if you are planning to use Android apps on your PC in the long run since it was easier to get the updates for the apps.

Using apps like BlueStacks and NoxPlayer also let you run Instagram, and other apps that are only mobile based, on PC.

However, one downside of using these apps is that you don’t get to run the latest Android OS which is also the case for many Android devices as well so unless you are using a pixel phone, your experience will not be inferior in comparison to your smartphone.

Running Android apps on Chromebook

Android and Chrome OS are both products of Google and it has been a long debate whether Chrome OS should exist poppy seeds, or should Android be evolved into a complete who is that can run on Chromebooks as well.

Recovering your contacts is easy on smartphones because of the features like always on Sync, which makes it possible for the smartphone to see every data in the cloud.

Recovering your instant messages.

Is smart messaging app that is available for smartphones has this functionality of taking a backup of the messages. Like in WhatsApp you can take a backup of your messages to Google Drive.

This will help you restore the messages on WhatsApp when you install it on another phone.

Use cloud apps like Dropbox and Google drive for saving important files.

Another thing you can do is keep your important files saved in either Dropbox or Google drive which will sync them to the cloud so that they are available on any device since the services are multi-platform you can access the files from an iOS device, a Windows PC, or a Mac.

Other things such as the installed apps on your phone, you can get a list of the installed phones from the Play Store so that you can install them again.

A DIY Solution to Create Overhead Videos for YouTube

You may have watched a lot of videos on YouTube where the camera is exactly on the top of the subject, these are mostly unboxing videos or the videos that show you how a specific thing is done, for example, Food recipes. There are a lot of food channels on YouTube that create overhead videos.

The overhead videos are easy to understand as they are recorded from the creator’s point of view, which gives you an easy understanding of how the things are going on.

Now, to create videos like that, a simple tripod is not enough. You will have to either buy an extension leg to mount of the tripod to get that vertical angle or a completely different Rig altogether which will cost a couple of hundred dollars.

And if you are just starting out it is difficult to put that kind of money into something that is kind of experimental.

For those of you who don’t know we also have got a food channel where we put food recipes, and we wanted to make short, crisp overhead videos for the channel, and since it was experimental, we did not want to invest t lot of money into it.

I wanted to create a DIY solution that would not cause a lot of money but at the same time get the job done, and we came up with this,

We actually created it using CPVC Pipes, which are easily available at the local Hardware Store. I’ve already created a video about how to create a selfie stick using CPVC pipe, but this one is pretty awesome, we have shot over 200 recipe videos using just this which is made of CPVC pipes and cost less than $5.

Let me show you how you can do it too if we are looking to create overhead videos for YouTube channel or any other platform.

You can buy CPVC pipes from your local Hardware Store, the standard size of 1 CPVC pipe is around 12 feet, and the Overhead Camera Rig that I created requires 16 feet of CPVC, so we bought two.

You need to get 8 pieces out of these CVPC pipes, 4 of which would be of the same size which will work as support, 2 will work as legs, and the other two will be joined where the camera will be mounted.

Here are the following measurements for my Overhead Camera Rig.

4 x 1.25ft
2 x 2.50ft
2 x 3.00ft

You will also require 2 elbows which look like this,

And this is how all can be put together to make sure inexpensive overhead video Rig.

You can also go one step further and close the holes of the pipes with End caps, that can also be bought from the hardware store, and you also may paint it with the colour of your choice using Spray paint. I am also planning to paint it black as soon as I overcome my laziness.

How to mount the Camera to this Rig?

To do that you need to drill a hole into the third Tee if you do not have got a drill machine you can also try it with a screwdriver, but it is going to take a little bit of time.

After you are done with making a whole you can use a quarter inch screw to pass it through this tee and tighten the camera on the other side.

If you can spend some more money you can also buy a cold show mount that can be screwed to the ring and it will make mounting and un-mounting the camera a little easier.

So this is how you get your work done without spending a lot of money, one more thing I would like to add as I have not fixed these pieces permanently, which means I can dismantle it anytime and take it with me anywhere I want but I usually don’t take it anywhere.

The choice is yours whether you want to conceal it using some kind of glue or just use it the way I am using.

There are two major differences between the phones, which is the screen resolution and the battery capacity.

The Redmi 5 has a screen resolution of 720×1440 pixels,whether Redmi Note 5 has 1080×2160 pixel. The screen density of Redmi 5 is 282ppi while the Redmi Note 5 has a screen density of 403ppi, which means the Redmi Note 5 screen is a lot sharper.

The Redmi Note 5 gets the 4000mAh battery like it’s predecessor, while Xiaomi decided to put a 3300mAh battery in Redmi 5.

But it also claims that Redmi 5 has the same battery performance in comparison to Redmi 4. But having a larger battery will help, and probably give more back up to the Redmi Note 5.

The Major difference between the phones is of course the processor, which is the reason they have been priced differently.

You get Snapdragon 625 in Redmi Note 5, where as the Redmi 5 has Snapdragon 450. It is needless to say that the Redmi Note 5 will perform better with a higher Snapdragon chipset.

But for normal activities, like casual browsing, social networking, and messaging, there won’t be much of a difference and I can say that after using the Redmi 4 as my primary phone for a couple of months, which had Snapdragon 435.

The Redmi 5 comes with an even better chipset which is set to improve the performance of the phone.

So which phone should you buy?

I have stated the differences between the phone and the question whether you should buy Redmi 5 or Redmi Note 5 comes down to your preference.

If you want a handy phone, just for casual browsing, not for any kind of hard core thing, such as gaming or multitasking, you will be happy with the Redmi 5.

But, if you are looking to do more, such as watching videos or maybe movies on your phone, and you do not worry about handling your phone with both hands, then you can surely go for the Redmi Note 5.

The price difference between the 32GB/ 3GB RAM variant for both the phones is just Rs 1000. You can get the Redmi 5 for Rs 8999 where the Redmi Note 5 can be bought for Rs 9999.

The 16 GB / 2 GB RAM variant of Redmi 5 comes even cheaper at Rs 7999, but there is no 16GB variant for the Redmi note 5, and I would recommend you go for the 32GB variant at least, because the storage fills up way too quickly these days.

There is a similar difference between the higher variant, the 64 GB / 4 GB RAM variant of Redmi 5 is priced at Rs 10999 and the Redmi Note 5 is priced at the base 11999.

While I don’t recommend you buy the 16 GB variant of Redmi 5, I also don’t see why would anyone buy a 64 GB variant of the Redmi 5, because, ‘budget’ is one of the key factors for buying an Redmi 5.

So the real competition is between the 32GB variant of both the phones.

Just for convenience, I would like to mention what better things you would get in Redmi Note 5 for those extra Rs 1000.

  • A full HD resolution screen,
  • A better screen display with 403ppi.
  • A bigger screen (though just 0.2 inches)
  • A better processor (Snapdragon 625)
  • A bigger battery (4000mAh)

Apple has been launching the new versions of their iPhone every year, but for the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple did something different by bringing two different versions.

Actually, 3 if we count the bigger (iPhone 8 Plus) and the smaller version (iPhone 8) as different phones.

Apple launched iPhone X, the reason for naming it iPhone X is because it was the 10th anniversary on the iPhone, the original iPhone was launched in 2007 and was unveiled by Steve Jobs himself.

And because it was the 10th year anniversary, Apple wanted to do something special, hence it went with their usual launch pattern, they also launched a phone with innovative Technologies and a totally new design.

The new iPhone 10 brought an all front screen, nearly bezel-less with a small notch on the top to house the front camera, and the sensors along with the hardware for their proprietary Face Recognition Technology.

So the question we are trying to address in this post is what’s the difference between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X and which iPhone you should pick?

Now, obviously, when it comes to pricing there is a huge difference of $300 between these two phones.

Other than the face recognition Technology the iPhone x take the emoji game to the next level with their Animoji, it uses a simple face recognition tech to make emojis more expressible they get a bit of personalization and you are able to use it in my messages.

Considering iPhone is all about the ecosystem and a lot of people buy it just because of using these messages or similar exclusive, this gimmick Animoji thing might interest you a bit.

Apart from the new technologies mentioned above, the iPhone X also comes with a bit of learning curve since there are many gestures and swipes are involved in doing things that were done using the home button, but I suppose it won’t be an issue, as everyone can adapt to new things in a matter of days.

So which one should you really buy?

If you want to play it safe go with the iPhone 8, because it is an improved version of the previous Apple phone, while the iPhone X is experimental, and many feel it is a launch done in a hurry.

Moreover, the first generation products are always kind of experiments, and companies learn from the feedback they get from these experiments and then they come back with an improved version of it, and the iPhone X or whatever Apple decides to call it, the next version shall be better than this one as Apple say, their iPhone Yet.

There is a video about the Drone weapon technology that has been floating on instant messaging apps for the last few days.

The 7-minute 41-second long video is showing how small drones can be used as Lethal Weapons in killing bad people precisely without any casualties.

Video showing the owner or the CEO of the company demonstrating the technology to an audience in an Apple-like event, talking about how small drones have the ability to kill half how the city the bad half.

The little killing drones termed ‘Slaughterbots’, do not require any interference from a human as they are all AI-based. And just require profiling of the target such as age, sex, and ethnicity.

People are forwarding this video to instant messaging apps assuming that this technology already exists and it’s an actual demo. Which is not the case.

The video is uploaded on YouTube in 2017 originally shared by a channel named Stop Autonomous Weapons. Surprisingly, it has only this video uploaded to its channel.

It has been reshared by many other YouTube channels including the YouTubne Channel Future of Life Institute. The same YouTube Channel has uploaded a sequel to this video named Slaughterbots – if human: kill().

But the reality is,

The scene is part of a short film that was released a couple of months ago. At that time the fictional video got coverage from several media sites, which also raised this concern of what good or bad will the technology work in the future. More about it can be read on Wikipedia.

The Wikipedia page calls it a dramatic video that has been made in Black Mirror style (A Netflix show that features how dark the tech and internet space can be for people).

As much as it is mind-blowing to watch the fictional video, it is scary at the same time, it shows us the future that is not so distant, what makes it scary is what happens if this technology gets into the wrong hands because if it has the capacity to kill the bad people just by profiling, it can also very well kill good people by profiling.

Looking at how fast Drone Technology has evolved in the last few years and AI is already capable of doing mind-blowing things, Drone weaponry Technology does not look far. Question is, when is it going to happen? Tomorrow, next week, next month or next year?

Sounds scary right? Well, relax, this future is too far, and might not even happen.

Videos like these go viral every few months. It’s like the Roboto killed 29 humans video, which was just a bogus claim that was taken down by sites that initially reported them.

Or the video of robots training with humans, which was just video editing magic.
