How to Clean the ‘Other Files’ and Save Storage Space on Macbook

I’ve been using the Macbook Air from last few years, I came to it after over a decade or being a Windows users. I still use Windows but I prefer my Macbook Air for work because it’s just amazing.

But I’m not happy about everything in the Macbook Air. And one of it is the Space issues.

Before we dig deeper into the issues, I want to tell you that I was never a guy who fills up even the last Gigabyte of storage on their laptop. My 1TB Windows Hard Drive is barely at 10% fill. But my 128GB MacBook Air is more than 70% is filled.

And let me tell you, there isn’t much I have saved on the Macbook Air. I spend most of my time inside a browser, even the Dropbox has just over the 500mb worth of files, Google Drive sits are 300 something MB.Macbook Storage Space Issues 01.jpgLooking at where all my storage space is used, Macbook Storage tab tells me I’ve got 34Gb worth of files that are not Movies, Apps, Photos or Audio. And yes, not even the backups from any iDevice. At this point, I was regretting my decision to go with a 128GB Macbook Air because I thought I don’t need much space because I was successfully using a Chromebook with just 32GB of SSD.

How to clear unwanted files and save space on Macbook Air

It’s actually not so tough to find where all the space is being used, you just have to open the Finder app, right click and click on ‘get info’ for all the folders.

Macbook Storage Space Issues 02.jpg

Like, when I do it on the Application folder, I can see I am using 16GB of storage space, checking each folder one by one will help you decide which one needs to go in order to get some space back.

The above methods work but it is a lot of effort to find out a place that is heavy with files. This is where this little app comes in handy. It’s called OmniDiskSweeper (download link)

It’s just a 2MB file which shows you every corner of your Macbook Air which stores the files so that you can easily destroy them to clear some space out. Macbook Storage Space Issues 03.jpg

Like when I used it to find files I can delete, it showed me that exact path where these files were saved, and these files can be deleted directly from the app.

I was able to delete over 14GB worth of files in just 2 minutes, I am sure I can do better in more time, so I’ll keep it installed. 2MB is not a lot of space after all. The benefits it brings is amazing. I am glad I found this app, I am now not regretting about buying a 128GB Macbook Air.

Use A MacBook with External Monitors and Keyboard Mouse Like A Desktop

It took us years to reach a level of mobility that has enabled us to get out there and still be connected to get work done.

I love it, and I love taking my Macbook Air out in the local cafe on sunny winters and work over a cup of coffee. Thank you, Apple, for creating such a wonderful product. Thank you, Steve Jobs.

However, I still love my trusty old Windows 10 based custom Built Desktop. I love working on it for one main reason, the big screen and a big table to position the keyboards to my liking and move the mouse around.

But sometimes, (which happens pretty frequently), I have a lot of pending work on my Macbook even when I stay at my home office.

Those days, I get confused about where I should work. I want to finish what I started on the Macbook Air and work as efficiently as possible.

And this is where this simple trick comes in handy. Turning my Macbook Air into an iMac. by connecting my 24 inch Monitor, my Favorite Keyboards and Mouse to it and keeping the MacBook Air aside, like it’s a Mac Mini.

Here’s how it works

Source: 9 to 5 Mac

You can connect the external Monitor, connect the mouse and keyboards, close the Macbook Air, and start working on the iMac convertible. There are thugs you need to keep in mind.

Firstly, there may be a problem with the Native screen resolution of the external MonitorMonitor not showing in the Display options in the System Preferences. Here is how to fix it

And maybe you can face a particular screen or black borders issue on the External Monitor. Here is how to fix it.

1. When you are past these two issues, you are ready to know what you need next.

(*In case you feel any other issue, feel free to use the comment section below to help others, TIA)

2. If you have a USB dongle (sorry Macbook 2016 users)  for connecting the Keyboard & Mouse, connect it to the Macbook Air, and see everything is working.

3. Now, make sure your Macbook Air is connected to the charger because it won’t work if you are in battery mode.

When your Macbook Air is on Battery, it would simply go to sleep, turning off the external monitors and disconnecting Keyboard & Mouse.

Close the display lid of the Macbook Air and keep it aside (only if you want to make your desk clean), or you can also buy one of those Docks or MacBook Air stands on Amazon to make it a neat setup. This is how it looks when it’s all connected and working.

Xiaomi Mi Max Review, the Bigger Phablet in the Market

Xiaomi launched Mi Max in the first quarter of 2016, introduced it in India after over six months but the availability of this Phablet was pretty much on and off, I bought it a few weeks ago and have been using it as my daily driver from last few weeks.

I think I’ve used it enough to qualify for writing a review of this huge 6.44-inch smartphone cum tablet.

The Form Factor

I’ve got to honest here, when I held it in my hands for the first time, my heart sank. I knew it was a big phone but didn’t expect to be such this huge.

Mi Phones are available online, which means you can’t tell how it looks or feels in the hand unless you order it and get it delivered.

This is where these reviews come in handy, as they share personal experiences of a fellow human being.

I had read a couple of reviews of Xiaomi Mi Max on the web, but the reason I had the ‘courage’ to buy it because I was already using a Tablet PC as my primary Computing Device from last one year, and it worked pretty high for me.

There is just one issue with my Tablet PC / Mobile Phone, and I always had to carry a bag or keep it in the hands all the time.

This was one tradeoff for having access to a bigger screen internet enabled a device which would make me more productive.

Mi Max was the best choice since it was the most prominent phone in the market and could fit into a pocket. Which would mean a perfect world for me?

It looks more like a Mobile than a Tablet PC because it is a Mobile with a bigger screen.

If you keep this beside Xiaomi’s popular Redmi Note 3, the Mi Max feels like Redmi Note 3 on steroids.

Built Quality

Xiaomi has made its name for providing quality products at reasonable prices, and Rs 14,999/- is a fair price to pay, so the quality you would expect from Xiaomi is what you get with the Mi Max.

You can easily categorize Xiaomi’s quality of products with their product names. Like the Mobile phones in the Redmi series, are budget-oriented phones, and the Mobile phones in the Mi Series are its premium phones.

Even though Mi Max looks almost exactly like the Redmi Note 3, it has been kept in the premium phones category by giving it a Mi tag.

I like the design, but I am not impressed with it, rather than making it look like a bigger screen Redmi Note 3, they should have given it different looks, I would have appreciated that.

But I did find some Cases that would give it a style it deserves.

Screen and Display

The phone is big, so the screen is bigger than normal phones. The 6.44-inch screen puts even the bigger devices like Redmi Note 3 to shame.

Back in 2011, Samsung Carved a separate category of phones by introducing a 5.3-inch Smartphone, which was considered as a big phone that someone coined a term Phablet (Phone + Tablet) for it.

Now that 5.5-inch screen is a norm in Smartphones, Xiaomi is just reintroducing the Phablet category with a 6.44 inch Mi Max.

As I said at the start of this article, I got intimidated by the sheer size of these phones, but over the few weeks of its usage, I have grown accustomed to the bigger screen.

Watching Videos on Mi Max in Landscape mode is a pretty fantastic experience. I love it and watch more videos just because it feels great to watch it on this big screen.

Since Amazon Prime Video has launched and Reliance Jio is still providing Free 4G Internet for the next three months, I don’t see myself quit watching videos on this device.

Apart from Watching videos, the bigger screen helps read long-form articles or books. I haven’t done it much since all of my free time is spent watching videos, thanks to the big screen, but I see it as a great reading device that also fits in the pocket of your pant.

My 8 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab is more significant than 6.44 inch Mi Max, but the display on Mi Max with a pixel density of 342ppi makes watching videos more enjoyable.

If you are someone who would use this device to consume content, that is, browsing Facebook, Whatsapp, Watching videos, reading books and playing games, this device gives an amazing experience.

Performance & Battery Life

The performance of a smartphone and its battery life are the most important things I look for in a phone. Because of the built quality, screen quality, and design is the second factor for buying a smartphone.

Mi Max has a Snapdragon 650 with Hexa-Core processor, the Rs 14999/- version has a 3GB RAM and 32GB Internal Memory.

I didn’t find any other phones in this price range that offered similar specs. Mi Max has no competition in this price range, at least right now.

3GB RAM is quite enough to make Mi Max run smoothly. I find 800-900MB RAM Free at any given time when there are a couple of apps running in the background.

I am not a fan of Geekbench scores to decide the performance of a phone, but they still provide some stats for people to make a decision. So here they are.

Talking about the battery, Mi Max has an enormous battery of 4850mAh, this is huge and had become many reasons to continue using this phone as my primary device.

My Samsung Galaxy Tab had a 4050mAh battery, and I used to love how my device used to stay alive for two days without a charge. And the Mi Max has 800 more mAh than so it makes me, even more, happier.

With 800 more mAh, I am still getting two days of power on Mi Max, but I am also watching more videos on this device.

I am now addicted to getting a screen on time of around 10 hours, and I think I am going to have a lot of battery trouble once I move to a normal 5.5 inch or 5-inch phone with less battery.

I wish that we can get a technology that can get us unlimited battery life on our phones before my Mi Max becomes obsolete, it’s a dream that will soon be a reality, but till then, I am happy with Mi Max battery life.

Camera (Videos and Still)

You know that you have to make some compromises when you look for the best phones as there is nothing called a perfect phone.

Well, for Mi Max, that compromise is the Camera. That doesn’t mean the Camera of Mi Max is not usable; in fact, it can pull some decent shots if you know how to make use of lights and angles. But if you are looking for a phone with a great camera, this is not your best bet.

Xiaomi has worked hard to offer a great camera in Mi Max, and it will be okay for most people who use their phones to capture day to day lives.

The Primary Camera is 13MP while the front is 8MP with a beauty feature that makes me, not so pretty face, a pretty face. :-)

You can shoot videos in 4K, although the phone has just Full HD Display, I appreciate the feature, even if it means the phone will max out its memory in just a few minutes of 4K video. Mi Max Prime (128GB Internal Storage) should be your pick if you are into 4K videos, but then you will have to shell out Rs 5000 Extra.

I initially had some issue with Capturing Videos, when ‘Okay Google’ voice assistant is set on ‘Always On’ it kept the microphone busy all the time, so the Videos could not be captured because the microphone was busy all the time. The instant solution was to disable ‘Always On’ but this was fixed with an update, and all is good now.

Software

It’s an Android-based phone like a million other phones, but Xiaomi used a custom ROM for their phones with under the name of MIUI.

Mi Max runs on MIUI 7.0 based on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and can be upgraded to MIUI 8, which I have done already. The MIUI 8 is said to have better memory and battery management. Both of which Mi Max has plenty.

Xiaomi is committed to bringing MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0 (Nougat) soon. The update will bring many features which will make the bigger screen of Mi Max more usable.

The feature I am looking forward to is the Split Screen feature which I used a lot in the Samsung Galaxy Tab A (Samsung Provides split-screen to some of their devices), now that Android 7.0 had split-screen as a built-in feature, I would enjoy it on my Mi Max as well.

You might be interested in reading my experience of using Samsung Galaxy Tab A as my primary device for over a year.

Conclusion

Xiaomi and some publications are calling it a Tablet that can fit into a pocket, but I do not agree with this.

While Mi Max is a great device, which has a more significant scene that is all great for entertainment, but I’ve used a Tablet PC as my primary device for a year, and I am now using Mi Max, I used these devices for creating content, doing work, like Emails, Light image, and video edits and posting on the Internet.

I can say that I was more efficient on Samsung Galaxy Tab A than the Mi Max, although the processor on Samsung Galaxy Tab A is less convincing. The Tablet PC gave more space on the screen to view more, write more and do more at a time while Mi Max makes things more significant, and doesn’t offer more.

And for most of the things, bigger doesn’t matter, more matters. So it is not a Tablet in your pocket, but it’s close enough.

Buy it if you want a device to consume content, you will love it,

Buy it; if you want a device to create content that can also fit in your pocket, you won’t regret it.

Remember what I said at the start of this article? My heart sank when I held it in my hands for the first time. I am happy that I chose to stick with it because it doesn’t feel that large now.

How Twitter is Trying to Become Facebook

0

I don’t get Twitter. No one in my friend circle is on Twitter; it’s a strange place, and people talk about everything from what they are having and where they are heading. It’s all text that is too limited to just 140 characters.

A friend said to me desperately after failed attempts to try using Twitter just like he does Facebook. I agree with him to some extent, because most of my friends are like that. They don’t get Twitter.

Comparing Twitter with Facebook seems like comparing Apples with Oranges though both can be grown in the same orchard, may share the same soil, but are grown in different seasons, look different and taste different.

Sadly it isn’t that simple with Facebook and Twitter. Both are popular Social Networks with millions of users. Only Facebook is a little ahead in the race.

We shouldn’t call it a race, but everybody is trying to make out by seeing recent changes Twitter has been doing to their site.

Ever since Jack Dorsey took the CEO position on Twitter, things have started moving fast for the bluebird. Every day, there is some change in the service. They recently replaced the ‘Favourite’ button with a heart-shaped ‘Like’ button (Facebook has already got one)

Before that, they brought video tweets that auto-play in the timeline (ahem, Facebook has that too)

Twitter Cards have been there for a long time. It simply enabled Web Publishers to enable the post preview when someone Tweets a link from their website. (Something similar to Facebook). This has made Promoted Tweets look like part of the Organic timeline of Twitter.

ALSO READ: Here is what all Facebook has been testing lately

The best part of Twitter has been its always active timeline, follow a bunch of people, and you will always find a tweet posted a few minutes ago. But, it seems Twitter is messing with it too, they have now started testing non Chronological timeline, showing relevant tweets to you.

Twitter highlights tweets from people with whose tweets you interact with. Behind this is a nasty algorithm that powers this entire thing, just like it does on Facebook, and people hate it. Here is what they say when they find it happening on Twitter.

And then there are Ads; Facebook makes a lot of money by letting Brands and Small Businesses Advertise on their platform. Twitter has also opened its Advertising platform to the general public now.

And Twitter is even trying to get more data from users. It has started asking their B’day.

http://twitter.com/asifahmd/status/674956021928857600

And then Twitter lifted the 140 character limit from the Direct Messages (DMs), and it seems they may increase the 140 character limit of a Tweet. Update: They increased the Tweet limit from 140 to 280 characters.

While changes are good and will help Twitter generate some revenue to operate smoothly and bring more features, people do not like the changes. They want Twitter to stay the same, a 280 character social setwork where people put stuff in real-time.

What’s going to change, and how much of it will stay in the future versions of Twitter? Only time will tell. Till then, enjoy the little messed up Twitter. It’s still fun to use it when there is nothing to do in life.

Facebook is finally doing something to address the fake viral stories that appear in the newsfeeds

0

If you spend a few hours of your everyday life on Facebook, like everyone else, then I am sure you must be aware of all the fake viral stories making their way to your newsfeed. Well, this is going to be fixed by Facebook. Finally.

In last 2 or 3 years, the number of viral sites has erupted on the internet and have kind of hijacked the newsfeed of people, thanks to the Clickbait headlines.

Social Media is the best place to spread a rumour, because of the virality factor. You just need a fake news website with a fake design and people believe and share it further. It slowly forms a chain of shares and likes, no one bothers to cross chek the information. Because nobody ain’t got no time for that. Right?
facebook-disputed-story1.png
So, Facebook is actually going to put some kind of badge on the shared stories that are fake that will say that the story is disputed.
facebook-sharing-disputed-story1
In order for it to be a disputed story, several people will have to report it, and it will be then reviewed by a third party agency, that will cross check the facts.
People will still be able to read or share it further, but the Facebook Algorithm will not let it appear in the Newsfeed so strongly.
Facebook Shared their entire statement on their newsroom blog, and Mark Zuckerberg also published a Facebook Post.
I am assuming those funny/shocking cat videos would still pop up in my newsfeed every now and then, but more serious political stories favouring a particular party, won’t be the point of discussions that I see regularly appearing these days.
And yes, I hope this to be rolled out to many other countries and not just the US, because it’s a problem everywhere.

Has WhatsApp Become Obsessive Compulsive Disorder for Our Generation?

Within the last decade, a lot has changed, particularly in the field of technology. People are more using technology nowadays, everything from banking to education, technology has revolutionized the way we do handle most basic affairs of daily life. With the coming of technology, it had certainly impacted our lifestyle in one way or the other, sometimes the effect it has is clearly visible but sometimes subtle.
In this article, I would like to shed some light, mostly based on personal experiences and observations, on how WhatsApp has almost become an addiction to most of the people and has become a major obsession and distraction for our generation.

WhatsApp was launched in 2009, first on iOS, then for Android smartphones. And in few years, the WhatsApp has penetrated to a larger audience in a very short span of time, mostly due to the easy availability of internet and cheaper smartphones. And it has very much changed the way we communicate with our friends, relatives, and colleagues.  The lingo for communicating someone regarding something has become, WhatsApp him.
using-whatsapp
Obviously, it had become the easiest and cheapest means of communication and is handy to inform the closest to us when anybody doesn’t want to make unnecessary calls. But sometimes when people start overusing it, it seems to be taking a share of our time, it is not meant to take. Some people are so hooked on it, that they are always chatting, maybe it becomes their escape mechanism or a supplementary entertainment.

For some people, it becomes complementary entertainment, as I have seen many people who start watching a movie and alongside with it start WhatsApping.

WhatsApp has become for our generations like an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), I can say mostly based on personal experiences.
OCD is a mental disorder in which people are known to do one or set of tasks repeatedly. One need to check things repeatedly, perform certain routines repeatedly or have certain thoughts repeatedly. The person is obsessed  with one thought which keeps doing round again and again in one’s mind.

The most common example of OCD is people fearing of germs and cleaning up again and again. Or the arranging of things in a certain manner.

I watched a video in which an expert dealing with OCD patients explained that some people in religious realm also, although in  very rare case suffers from OCD, who end up doing wudu (Muslim ritual cleaning of themselves before every prayer) for up to 30 minutes to achieve purity to perform prayers. Some even end up praying many times than required as they think their level of concentration wasn’t enough.

The OCD can not be cured, but some treatment may help.

The urge to check the messages from friends keeps pestering to open and check WhatsApp again and again. Mostly the groups are muted because I don’t want to receive unwanted and annoying notifications from a group when you don’t want to be part of the chat. Maybe because of the muted group, I feel compelled to check again and again if anybody has left any messages.

smartphone-users

But when I see people around me opening and scrolling down the WhatsApp again and again, whether in office, elevators, public transport or home. I think many people have this problem, and they are hooked to it. Everyone seems compelled to check again and again as if this thought is doing rounds on their mind from time to time.

The conversations that could be finished in ten minutes consumes up to an hour of time. Most of the people just want to find someone to whom they can text on WhatsApp. People falling asleep with their chats open, but still couldn’t leave the WhatsApp. Most people after waking up would look for their phones and the first thing they tap on the screen of their smartphones is WhatsApp or the unread chats piled up as notifications on the screen.
If there are no chats or messages sent by someone, people would open WhatsApp and start looking for display picture of the contacts, scrolling down as though they are longing for them to message them as scrolling down the each contact.

What a weird generation we’re living in when people smile to their phones.?

To change this, I restricted myself using WhatsApp during a particular time of day, and it had really helped. But still on weekends, I find myself overusing it, but certainly less than the people around me. I started learning a new language to fill the time and keep myself busy with it on weekends.
The one thing that can help a person, if one thinks he/she is in this addiction, is to keep yourself busy with something else such as reading books, playing some games which would keep you healthy, or learn a new language. We should try to make most of our time, which we don’t realize until it has passed.

Find Out How Much Nigerian Scammers Scam from People

0

Ever got an email from Nigerian princes wanting you to be their business partner? or the Nigerian Princes wanting to marry you and make you a millionaire just out of your inbox?

Well, mostly these emails go straight into the spam folder, thanks to the intelligent filtering of Gmail (and other email serves).

But have you ever wondered how much successful these scammers can be in ripping people off? Well, this is exactly what we will find out in this post.

Back in 2014, I did a post about Nigerian Scammers scamming over $817 Millions just from India. and the figure for US is even more jaw dropping. about $2.3 Billion, that a big B. The figures were just for 2013. You can check out the detailed post

I was looking for the data for 2014 and 2015 from the same source but couldn’t find. So I am using other source which reports less loss but it works on number of cases reported.

how-much-nigerians-scammed

Here is a data from a website called Scam Watch, which educated people about different types of scams, they have got some data for Nigerian scams as well.

  • In 2014, the reported cases were around 1053 and the total money lost, was, $2 193 094- see detailed charts
  • In 2015, the reported cases were around 980 and the total money lost, was, $4 549 807 – see detailed charts

Note: These are the number only from the cases reported on the website, the actualy number is much higher as cases reported to the police are much more.

The page on the website also explains about the scams, some warning signs and how you can avoid the. I think it’s pretty useful for every one. You should know about it and tell all your friends too, so that they don’t lose money.

Warning Signs

  • You receive a contact out of the blue asking you to ‘help’ someone from another country transfer money out of their country (e.g.  Nigeria, Sierra Leone or Iraq).
  • The request includes a long and often sad story about why the money cannot be transferred by the rightful owner.
  • You are offered a financial reward for helping them access their ‘trapped’ funds. The amount of money to be transferred, and the payment that the scammer promises to you if you help, is usually very large.
  • The writing in the message is in very polite but broken English.
  • The scammer will often ask you to send money via a money transfer service.

Protect yourself

  • Never send money or give credit card details, online account details or copies of personal documents to anyone you don’t know or trust and never by email.
  • Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, pre-loaded card or electronic currency. It is rare to recover money sent this way.
  • Do not agree to transfer money for someone else. Money laundering is a criminal offence.

My Experience with Reliance JioNet Wi-Fi Hotspot

0

PS: I am talking about the Jio-Net Wi-Fi Hotspot Access, Reliance jio has set up at various public places, and not about Jio-Fi, the portable hotspot being sold by Reliance at Rs 1999/-

So, the much awaited Jio is going to be launched on 1st January 2017, and till then, everyone with a 4G enabled phone is welcome to use it for Free under their Welcome Offer. In fact, 16 Million people already started using it

Yes, 16 Million people already started using it within just a month of its announcement of the Welcome Offer.

And, looking at the long queues to get the new Jio SIM, when I visited the Reliance Digital Store today morning, I can safely say that, the craze for Jio is still going on.

jio_plans

Under their offering of unlimited calling, text, and affordable high-speed 4G data, one of the key offerings is the JioNet Wi-Fi HotSpot Data. Almost all their plans offer some JioNet Wi-Fi data, and it is just the double of what the plan offers for 4G data via LTE Network on Phone.

But no one really writes about how reliable it is. Okay, some of the sites might have talked about it but, in comparison to other offerings by Jio, JioNet wasn’t talked about much.

jionet-wi-fi-hotspot-review

Since I live in Lucknow, and just 3 kms away from my Home, there are several JioNet Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed, I’ve been using them from last few months, even before I started using the Reliance Jio SIM.

So How Good it is?

Whenever I visit the place, I find a big crowd enjoying the free access to Internet using the jioNet Wi-Fi.

using-jionet-in-ccd

Fortunately, there is a cafe, (which doesn’t offer free Wi-Fi) where the JioNet Wi-Fi signals are strong enough to connect to it easily and face no disconnection issues for several hours.

I have been going to the cafe for some writing work and it’s actually my preference to visit this specific Cafe, because of the fast internet via JioNet.  I use it even when I have the Welcome Offer enabled on my 4G phone, it saves the phone battery.

Will it be usable to Jio Subscribers under the Jio Plans after 1st January 2017?

A lot of people have been complaining about Reliance Jio offering JioNet data just on the paper since it is not available everywhere.

Reliance is said to be working on setting up more JioNet Wi-Fi Hotspot Access throughout the country which will solve this problem.

Talking about the speed, when I tested using the speed test website, didn’t show impressive speeds but I can stream videos on YouTube, browse sites without any hiccups. It is in fact, as reliance as my Home Wifi.

jionetspeedtest_lucknow

This is when everyone is enjoying the free unlimited data. I am hoping it will be better once the Welcome Offer is over.

As I said above, JioNet data will be more usable when more places get covered and the Free offer ends.

And by any chance, if it gets set up like it is in my city, i.e, near a cafe, or some place where you can sit and work (or play), it will be more usable than the 4G data offered from the LTE network on your plan.

I’ve used Public Wi-Fi at several places and almost all were problematic in some say or the other, JioNet is not perfect, but it’s good. In fact, it’s pretty good.

3 Best Chrome Extensions I’ve Used as A Quick Timer

If you are looking for a handy timer while working on your Computer for things like focussing on something for a few minutes or getting a reminder to do a certain thing after a while. In this article,

I am going to list some of the timers in the form of Google Chrome extensions that are pretty helpful for quick tasks.

Strick Workflow

Strick Workflow Restrict Websites.jpg

If you are a fan of GTD (Getting Things Done) you must be aware of the Pomodoro Technique. Well, Strick Workflow a small extension based on the technique.

What is does is, it gives you a block of 25 minutes when you turn it on, which you use for doing something that requires complete attention.

This chrome extension is pretty helping is doing that because of it, as the name suggests, restricts certain websites for that 25-minute block.

After 25 minutes, you hear a notification, telling you 25 minutes are over. What I like about this extension timer is that it shows you the time at on the extension icon.

Strick Workflow Timer Pomodoro.jpg

But that doesn’t mean you are done with your tasks, so this app allows you to keep working and click on the timer only when you are actually done, which would start your break of 5 minutes.

Now, while you do have the option to add/remove websites from the blacklist, but you don;t have the option to increase of decrease the 25-minute time block. Which means you won;t find it useful if you are looking for a timer that notifies you for 10 or 5 or maybe 1-minute thing.

Break Time

One Break Timer.jpg

Break time is pretty much like the strict workflow.

But instead of 25-minute block, if gives you a 28-minute time block to work with, followed by a 2-minute break. by default

Thankfully, it lets you customize the time by going to options, which takes a  few clicks. So, you would not find it much useful if you need time blocks that vary too much.

The options panel offers more flexibility, like enabling the working hours, or reset the timer when you are idle, i.e, not working or typing.

So, you can use this app if you are a workaholic and wants to get up from your desk for a quick break.

Well, it will truly help you take a break because it popups up the break time window which covers the entire screen.

1 Click Timer

1 Click Timer Chrome Extension.jpg

1 Click Timer gives the best of both of the extensions I talked above.

I let’s you choose the time just by clicking on the icon , making it a truly useful timer.

Also, if shows you the time left just by looking at the icon.

While it may not have the strick workflow mode, which blocks the sites from browsing when you choosea time block, or it may not offer an option to enabled featurs like working hours or resetign the timer.

It does that one task of timer pretty well, and that is, letting you set a timer pretty fast.

Bonus Tip: You can also try Google Now on your PC or Mobile, since it syncs across various devices with same Google Account, you won’t miss those quick timers to make an important call in next 15 minute or  a meeting in half an hour. And here are few more Google Tips you find useful

Google Music is Now Available in India, but will it stop Music Piracy?

Google has launched Google Music in India, bringing a catalog of millions of songs to purchase in a single tap.

Google Music was launched in the US in 2011, so it took five years for Google to bring local content for purchase in India. At a time when there are already a bunch of services that offer Music.

Update: Google has retired Google Music and has launched YouTube Music, which is available on a monthly subscription and comes bundled with YouTube Premium.

The users can buy individual songs at Rs 15, and the Prices of the Music Albums vary like Freaky Ali music album is available for Rs 40, while the Music Album of Sultan is priced at Rs 190.

google-music-available-in-india01

Before the availability of Google Music, there were many Online Music streaming services available such as Gaana.com, Hungama Music app, Saavn etc.

Mostly all the subscription-based, you pay monthly fees and enjoy the ad-free streaming service with offline music support. Google Music lets you buy individual songs, more like iTunes.

I find the Google Music model useful as I am not always listening to Music, and I am more interested in buying individual songs every once in a while.

So will it stop the music piracy anytime soon?

Music Piracy has always been there, especially in India, where there was no actual way to buy Music in Digital Format. Most people find it easy to download the songs rather than going to the market and buy a Music CD.

To offer DRM Free MP3 Downloads online, Flipkart had started one such service called Flyte, but it had to shut down in just a year of its launch.

The reason was not enough traction, but I had accessed the service, and its collection was not huge, not even big by normal standards.

google-music-available-in-india

On the other hand, Google Music is an addition to Google Play, which already offers Movies and Books to buy. Music is an addition to it, meaning people who have got their Credit Cards saved in Google Wallet would be able to buy songs just like they buy Movies, Books or Paid Android apps from Play Store.

Currently, Jio is offering free internet, bringing more people online for the first time, but again, people are coming in because it’s free.

Watch YouTube Videos Without Spending Huge Data is Now Possible with YouTube Go

Finally, there is a way to watch YouTube without worrying about too many data spend because videos take the most of the data.

YouTube has grown tremendously in last few years, and its usage in India is growing at a faster rate.

With the Internet penetration increasing in India, more people are discovering the Internet.

Even though we have now 4G offered by various telecom operators, it is still expensive and people who are just getting started with the Internet, are using 2G connections.

Or then the people, like Students and users from 2 tier cities of India might be using a 3G connection, they have to spend their data smartly.

Data is like Money, we have limited data and we have to spend the month in that limit only.

And in cases like this, many have to wait to connect to a Wi-Fi to enjoy videos on YouTube.

That’s going to change now with the YouTube Go App.

Google’s new initiative to let 2G users enjoy YouTube by downloading the videos in compressed form.

Some of the features of the YouTube Go app are,

Preview Video to see if you want to download the video or not

The YouTube Go app lets you view few frames of the video to actually let you know whether you want to download it or not.

Choose the video size to download

YouTube go lets you choose few options to download the video in different sizes, i.e, low quality, standard quality etc. This gives you control over how much data you want to spend on the video.

Share video with friends without the Internet

YouTube Go also allows you to share the saved videos with friends without the internet. It will use Bluetooth to share the video with friends.

You can check out more about the YouTube Go from the link below
